Gamma-ray astronomy above ~50 GeV is now an important astronomical discipline, with a catalogue of almost 100 sources of many different classes. This is primarily due to the excellent sensitivity achieved by the current generation of ground-based, imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Here, I will describe the development of the technique, the status of the instrumentation and the analysis methods.
